Snow Cows: A Winter Portrait Series About Stillness, Memory & Belonging

In Snow Cows, time pauses.

The world turns soft, the horizon blurs, and familiar shapes dissolve into winter abstraction. In this stillness, the ordinary becomes sacred — a field, a tree, a herd — rendered as both fine art photography and painterly mixed-media artwork.

This series is my meditation on stillness, impermanence, and the way snow transforms the mundane into the mystical. It bridges documentary calm with painterly transcendence, reflecting my visual ethos: art as emotional quietude.

The Story Behind Snow Cows

Photographed on my Leica Q2 in McDonald, Pennsylvania, the series centers on three rescued Highland cows — Libby, Opal, and Ollie — who live at Hickory Hearth Highlands, a small family-run sanctuary outside Pittsburgh. I’ve spent many winters there, and each visit deepened my connection to their quiet resilience.

Their vulnerability resonated with me in a profound, personal way.

My father was abandoned as a child and adopted in the 1950s in China. Despite the circumstances, he grew into a respected tailor in Hong Kong’s Mongkok District. I grew up at his sewing table, watching him create beauty with patience, precision, and grace.

I learned about his adoption just before graduating high school — a revelation that shaped how I understand belonging, care, and the fragile threads that tie us to one another.

That history lives inside these touching portraits of Snow Cows.

Why This Collection Matters to My Practice

My work has always centered on revealing the invisible — the vulnerable, the overlooked, the soft things that survive harsh conditions.

Snow Cows continues that lineage through:

  • Snowscapes that evoke calm and clarity

  • Highland cow portraits that feel intimate and soulful

  • Painted Photographs that blend fine art photography with tactile, painterly textures

  • Themes of belonging, memory, and resilience

  • Warm neutrals and soft whites ideal for interior design spaces
